Porcelain Fused to Metal

Advantages:

  • Improved resistance to decay
  • High durability
  • Does not cause tooth sensitivity
  • Resists leakage

Disadvantages:

  • Requires removal of teeth
  • Higher cost

Gold Alloy

Advantages:
  • Increased resistance to further decay
  • Excellent durability
  • Does not corrode within mouth
  • Minimal tooth enamel removal
  • Does not cause excessive teeth wear

Disadvantages:

  • Not tooth colored
  • May irritate sensitive teeth
  • High cost

Porcelain (Ceramic)

Advantages:

  • Little tooth enamel removal required
  • Extra resistance to decay
  • Resistance to surface wear and leakage
  • No tooth sensitivity

Disadvantages:

  • Can become damaged with biting forces
  • Not recommended for molar teeth
  • High cost

Nickel or Cobalt Chrome Alloys:

Advantages:

  • Excellent durability
  • Resists further decay
  • Minimal tooth removal
  • Resists leakage

Disadvantages:

  • Not tooth colored, dark silver metal color
  • May cause irritation to sensitive teeth
  • Can be abrasive to opposing teeth
  • Higher wear to opposing teeth
