You can also reduce the risk of cavities by limiting the amount of sugary foods you eat. Drink a can of soda in one sitting instead of continuously throughout the day. If you use a straw, you can drink it without having it affect the teeth.
Toothpaste and mouthwash containing fluoride has also been effective in treating cavities. Fluoride is incorporated onto our teeth and helps make teeth more resistant to decay. After teeth are formed, fluoride reverses the progress of early cavities, preventing the need for corrective treatment.
An office procedure known as sealants can reduce cavities on the occlusal, buccal, and lingual surfaces of the back teeth. This is white resin material that protects the pits and fissures of the tooth, where food particles can be trapped. They are frequently used on children’s teeth to prevent cavities on growing molars.
Having a dry mouth is the greatest risk for developing cavities. Saliva is important for rinsing away plaque and neutralizing acid. It is important to schedule regular dental visits, at least twice per year, to ensure full protection from cavities.
