TMJ Pain

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint.  This joint allows your lower jaw to be connected to the lower jaw or skull at the temporal bone.  This joint allows the jaw to perform numerous functions, including chewing.

The chewing muscles or the joint itself may be causing pain if you are experiencing temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.  TMD can be the result of stress, excess jaw clenching, or teeth grinding.

 Some TMD symptoms include:

  • Pain during mouth movement
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Jaw becoming stuck
  • Headaches or ear pain
  • Clicking or popping sounds
  • Teeth grinding

A number of TMD symptoms are associated with various health problems. Only a TMJ specialist in San Diego such as Dr. Hegde can determine what symptoms are caused by TMD. Teeth grinding is especially problematic and can lead to additional health problems.

If you suspect that you are affected by TMD, we encourage you to come in for a consultation.  We can help diagnose the problem and provide relief for your symptoms. Pain relievers and cold compresses are also short-term methods that can help you find relief for pain symptoms.
