What about using a dental laser instead of a drill?
A popular type of laser for dental cavity treatment is the erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnett (Er:YAG). This technology removes tiny layers of tooth without discomfort or complications. There is no need for an injection, the lasers can be used for treating small and medium sized cavities in adults and recently, children.
Dental lasers are not recommended for removing old, damaged, or worn out fillings. They are also not effective in removing soft dental decay, preparing crowns, inlays, onlays, porcelain veneers, or for root canals.
The costs of using dental lasers have also limited their use. The ER:YAG laser costs between $25,000 – $40,000. Lasers can be leased for a certain dollar amount per use. The higher costs leads to higher fees for patients being treated with lasers.
