All You Want to Know about Invisalign Clear Aligners

A revolution in dental esthetics, Invisalign braces are preferred for their invisibility and removability. However, that is not all you should know if you are thinking of getting clear aligners. Read this blog to find out all the relevant information you should have before choosing Invisalign.

How do you get started with Invisalign?

First, your dentist assesses whether Invisalign is right for you. In most cases, it will correct your teeth just as effectively as traditional braces, but traditional braces may still be preferable for straightening severely crooked or crowded teeth. If you are the right candidate for Invisalign clear aligners, your dentist will start the treatment program. They will use 3D imaging technology to take digital scans and photographs to replicate the model of your teeth and mouth. This technology lets you virtually preview the progress of your treatment and the expected changes in your smile. It is one of the crucial steps that helps you decide if the outcome will match your expectations, and whether you should continue with the treatment. These digital images are sent to a dental lab where dental technicians use them to create customized aligner trays for you. When the customized trays are ready, your dentist fits these on small attachments that help the trays stay put. These attachments are acrylic-resin buttons that are clear, nearly invisible, temporary, and painless to install. Once your dentist ensures that the aligners fit well, he or she will share aftercare instructions before you leave.

Is Invisalign better than traditional braces?

Except in rare cases wherein Invisalign may not be fully effective, it is better than traditional braces on many counts. Invisilign comprises nearly invisible braces that are removable too, which means they are unnoticeable and make oral hygiene routine easier to maintain. Removability also ensures the freedom to eat most types of foods you like. With braces on, you need to follow several restrictions. In addition, clear aligners are more comfortable and safer. Metal braces have wires and brackets that may damage your mouth, and the braces also need periodic tightening to show results.

How to use and maintain Invisalign every day?

You need to wear Invisalign at least 22 hours a day, including while you sleep. Wearing it for shorter durations may prolong the treatment period. Invisalign treatments last 20 weeks to 18 months, depending upon the condition of your teeth and how diligently you follow the aftercare instructions.

Take your aligners off while eating and drinking, and clean your teeth before putting them on again. Brush and floss your teeth regularly to prevent cavities and plaque build-up. Do not smoke when you are wearing aligners. It makes them turn yellow over time and visible. Even if you remove Invisalign to smoke, the stains on your teeth from smoking will be visible, since the aligners are transparent.

Clean your aligners as instructed. (Caution: Using detergent or any other chemical may damage them and affect your course of treatment.) Visit your dentist every 4-6 weeks for review and modifications (if required).
